In today’s Ask Pogue,
a longtime film photographer expresses concern that the previous
simplicity of digital photography is beginning to fade away. Now, he
contends, digital cameras are getting even more
complicated to use than
film cameras were. Can’t we leave most decisions to the camera?
The answer: Yes, we
can. You’ll be just fine using Auto (or a semiautomatic mode like
Shutter Priority or Aperture Priority). In fact, that’s what many pros
do.
But his question
sends me off on a rant about something that’s always bugged me. There’s
one important piece of data that’s missing from every photo ever printed
in a photo magazine or on a website. Watch the video to see what it is.
