Little girl in famous baby picture growing up

PHOENIX -- The picture in the news this week out of Ohio of newborn twins holding hands brought back memories of another famous baby picture. It's the picture taken Oct. 9, 2013 of the Valley baby reaching out
of her mother’s womb to hold the doctor’s finger before birth. That story of baby Nevaeh has been viewed more than one million times on azfamily.com and has been seen by millions of people around the world. Nevaeh is no longer a baby. For Mother’s Day week 3TV caught up with Nevaeh and her mother to see how the family is doing after all the fame has died down. "She's very active. She's hyper and she has an attitude," said Alicia Atkins, laughing as her daughter bravely confiscates the iPhone belonging to the reporter who was interviewing her mother. The precocious little 18-month-old still likes to get her picture taken. Of course, no picture will likely ever be as famous as her first. "She has seen the picture probably a million times but she doesn't have any idea yet," said Atkins. It was actually Nevaeh’s dad, Randy, who snapped the famous photo as his wife was giving birth by caesarean section. But the picture has, nevertheless, helped Atkins’s professional photography business, Alicia Samone Photography. "Every time I go anywhere people are, ‘You're the mom. You're her mom. You're that picture. It never ends. It keeps coming back to us," said Atkins with a smile. Nevaeh is happy and healthy but she gave the family a scare recently. Doctors told Atkins that Nevaeh had an eye problem that could possibly be caused by brain cancer. Thankfully, it wasn't cancer or a tumor but an issue with Nevaeh’s left eye means she will likely wear glasses for the rest of her life. "They said she wasn't using her left eye and that if she continued not to use it it would go lazy and eventually she would go blind. So they put her on glasses and she does have to wear them every single day," said Atkins. Otherwise, things are good for the family of five, which also includes three-year-old and four-year-old brothers Landyn and Mekhi. "She's so close to her brothers it's crazy. She loves her brothers and they love her to death." As for the famous picture, "We have never even printed it out yet," said Atkins, acknowledging the surprise that causes people. "Nope, it's still on my computer." Alicia said the family will someday do something special with the photo. They've had several offers to buy the picture but haven’t decided who to sell it to just yet and they will never give up the copyright -- that belongs to Nevaeh.   "It's something fun that will hopefully never end," said Atkins.
