it happened in Amsterdam in 1928

it happened in Amsterdam in 1928. Shocking the sports world, the FIFA Congress decided to stage a world championship. Two years later, the first FIFA World Cup opened at the brand-new Estadio Centenario in
Montevideo. A new era had begun in world football, and the FIFA Congress’ gamble paid off. The event was a sporting and financial success, leading to one of the most anticipated and fiercely competitive sporting events in the world. Even the video game it spawned – available in 18 languages and 51 countries – is one of the best selling franchises, with more than 100 million copies sold worldwide.

This year the FIFA World Cup will run from June 12 through July 13. Follow all the action on Yahoo Sports, and click through the slideshow for a highlight of FIFA products for every fan. | By Victor Paul Alvarez
