Joy eases heartbreak as wife in coma gives birth

A pregnant woman from Northern California who has been in a coma since March gave birth via C-section Thursday. (To help the family, donations can be made at http://www.gofundme.com/7gi63g).
Melissa Carleton has been in a coma since having a seizure related to a brain tumor in March. Ten weeks ago her family wasn't sure Melissa or her baby could make it to today; but Thursday doctors successfully delivered a healthy boy.
Her husband Brian Lande was tending to baby West, and his wife, who is able to nurse the baby with some assistance. The family is celebrating a victory after not knowing if both mom and child would make it this far.

“This is a story of joy, and it’s not lost on us that this is a story about Brian and his love. He has taken care of our daughter in a way that parents can only hope for, and that’s a credit to Melissa, because (she) chose him,” grandfather John Farrell said. He adds that since the birth Melissa has "been making eye contact... she grabbed Brian's cheek with her hands and pulled her face down to her face." All of those signs of awareness are "fairly new," he says.
